BEIJING, Sept. 26, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- With its bright colors and decorative features, the peasant paintings of Dongfeng County, Liaoyuan, Jilin, are full of the splendid landscapes and local customs of northern China. Peasant paintings came about during China's period of reform and opening up. In recent years, paintings also include the new countryside construction, portraying contemporary daily life.
The original painters were village peasants, and started with propaganda posters, colorful ceiling paintings and paintings of the Kitchen God. Nowadays, painters range from amateurs (and even children) to art professors. Peasant paintings have changed from being created by peasants to peasants being the subject of the paintings.
With a total investment of RMB35.8million, the Dongfeng Chinese Peasant Paintings Museum covers an area of 10,000 sq.m. and can display 1,500 paintings. The museum opened its doors in October 2011, marking a promising period for the peasant painting industry and also provides a window for visitors to see the history of peasant painting.
The paintings have gained great achievements: 580 pieces have won national awards, 185 are collected by the Chinese Art Gallery, and more than 600 are collected by the UN. The Dongfeng Chinese Peasant Painting Art Festival in 2012 collected paintings across the country, giving painters a chance to exchange experience, receive rewards, as well as take part in setting the Guinness World Record for "the biggest art lesson in the world."
