PCI Education Announces Winners of 20th Anniversary Grant
Twenty Educators from Across the Country Receive Grant Funding for Their Classrooms
SAN ANTONIO, Nov. 15, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- PCI Education, the premier provider of resources for students with special needs, announces the winners of the 20th Anniversary Grant. Hosted by the online community WeAreTeachers, the grant program is designed to provide special education teachers the opportunity to earn money for their classrooms, while sharing best practices with educators across the country.
Nearly 300 educators nationwide responded to this prompt to enter the grant program: "Have you ever taught a lesson that really resonated with a special needs student? Tell us about a lesson you teach that was specifically influenced by that experience." After applying, educators invited friends and colleagues to vote for their favorite lesson idea. By publishing all of the submissions online, the grant program created a wealth of teacher-generated best practices for the special education classroom.
After two weeks of voting, the top five submissions emerged. Each of the five educators with the most votes will receive a $200 cash grant and a Flip Video™ camera to capture their ideas in action.
The five grand-prize winners are:
- Susie McKelvey, an intervention specialist from Minerva High School in Minerva, OH for "Being Prepared for the World of Work"
- Adela Suciu, a resource teacher from Manning Junior High School in Manning, SC for "Let's Learn How to Spell!"
- Elaine Osborne, an active learning teacher from Hunt Middle School in Frisco, TX for "Grip Enhancing Object Wall"
- Joelle Lea, a structure learning program teacher from McMinnville High School in McMinnville, OR for "We Need a Bigger Tank?"
- Cindy Sandoval, a special education teacher from Wayland Bonds Elementary School in Oklahoma City, OK for "Multiplication with Manipulatives"
PCI Education is also awarding the next 15 teachers who received the most online votes with a $200 gift certificate to spend on teaching materials. To view the full list of winners, visit the grant website.
"Congratulations to our grant winners, and thank you to all of the teachers who shared their innovative ideas and teaching strategies," said Lee Wilson, president and CEO of PCI Education. "Over the past 20 years, PCI Education has seen first-hand the supportive and collaborative nature of the special education community. We know both teachers and students will benefit from this collection of new teaching ideas."
The five grand-prize winners compiled more than 4,000 votes combined, and the nearly 300 entries generated upwards of 7,000 votes overall. The grant submissions from teachers will remain on www.weareteachers.com as a resource for educators serving students with special needs.
