Pattern Completes Four Agreements to Deliver 870 MW of Wind Energy to the Ontario Power Authority
Power Purchase Agreements Will Further the Investments Made in Ontario, Creating Significant Jobs, Revenue and Clean Energy
TORONTO, Aug. 4, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Pattern Energy Group LP (Pattern) and Samsung Renewable Energy (Samsung) today announced they have signed four separate power purchase agreements with Ontario Power Authority (OPA). These agreements will provide 870 megawatts (MW) of clean energy from wind energy projects to OPA, enough to power more than 300,000 homes every year.
"These agreements represent a historic commitment to creating jobs, building factories and installing wind power projects in the province of Ontario," said Mike Garland, CEO of Pattern Energy. "Pattern, Samsung and the government have invested a significant amount of time, as well as tens of millions of dollars in the development of these projects. As a result, our initiatives have already resulted in two new factories to be committed by Siemens and CS Wind in Ontario. In addition, these efforts have created good new jobs to support the wind industry in Ontario and a significant number of additional new jobs will be created as progress continues. Pattern is very excited about completing the permitting process and working with the communities so we can start construction of these important clean energy projects."
"Together with our partners, Samsung is making an unprecedented $7 billion private sector investment in Ontario," said Cheol-Woo Lee, Senior Executive Vice President, Samsung C&T Corporation. "This investment will create the world's largest cluster of wind and solar power, putting Ontario on the global renewable energy map. Today's announcement is a major milestone for our project and the signed power purchase agreements allow us to move forward confidently to create real jobs and real clean energy in Ontario, for generations to come."
Pattern and Samsung are making significant progress on their wind energy projects in Ontario, including South Kent Wind, a 270 MW project under development in Chatham-Kent, Ontario and 150 MW of wind from the Grand Renewable Energy Park, under development in Haldimand County, Ontario. In addition, Pattern and Samsung have signed agreements to acquire and will be developing two projects totaling 450 MW. These four projects comprise the portfolio of 870 MW in the power purchase agreements.
Today's announcement is a direct result of Samsung's Green Energy Investment Agreement with the Government of Ontario, which commits Samsung and its partners to bring $7 billion in investment to Ontario to create new manufacturing jobs and capacity and generate 2,500 megawatts of renewable energy. As part of the agreement with the province, Samsung and its partners are establishing four manufacturing facilities in Ontario, creating 1,440 manufacturing and related jobs building wind and solar technology for use in Ontario and export across North America. Pattern and Samsung have agreed to develop this 870 MW of wind power utilizing Ontario-made wind turbine components. A total of 600 MW of wind turbine components are currently committed from the new factories in Tillsonburg and Windsor.
