Patriot Day "Field of Flags" Memorial to Honor 9/11 Victims
LOS ANGELES, Aug. 30, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Marking the 10-year-anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks, the Exchange Clubs of Salem, Ore., and its community partners will erect a Patriot Day "Fields of Flags" Memorial to honor the tragedy's victims and nation's service men and women who have given their lives to keep America safe.
The memorial will be held Sept. 8-11, 2011, at Salem's Riverfront Park. More than 5,000 flags and banners will be flown during the three-day event. The flags can be purchased for $25 to honor a fallen soldier, emergency responder or 9/11 victim. They can be picked up after the memorial has concluded on Monday, Sept. 12.
"The Field of Flags Memorial has already received an astonishing show of encouragement from the Salem business community," said Jerry Thompson, coordinator for the event. "We are so grateful for the generous support without which we would not be successful. This memorial is so important, and these contributions demonstrate how committed this nation is to honoring the victims of 9/11 and our troops."
JM Eagle, the world's largest manufacturer of plastic pipe, is partnering with United Pipe and Supply to donate more than 60,000 feet of white plastic pipe—which will be used as poles for the memorial's flags. JM Eagle and United Pipe are among the many sponsors of the event.
"JM Eagle is honored to be a part of Patriot Day and the Field of Flags Memorial," said Neal Gordon, JM Eagle's vice president of marketing. "We are all so proud of the sacrifices our troops have made to keep us safe in the decade since 9/11. JM Eagle simply wants join with the Exchange Clubs of Salem and other event sponsors to say thank you to our service men and women and pay tribute to the victims of 9/11."
United Pipe President Terry A. Dotson agreed, saying: "Americans everywhere will be honoring the sacrifices our country has made on Sept. 11. This memorial is not only appropriate but necessary to pay tribute to those brave Americans who have lost their lives defending our country. We are delighted to take part."
JM Eagle's latest donation marks the second time the company has given its products for use in a Patriot Day commemoration. As with the Los Angeles-based company's first donation on the 5th anniversary of the attacks, JM Eagle's 1" PVC Schedule 40 Plumbing pipe -- proudly manufactured by employees at the company's Stockton, CA plant -- will be used to hold up the thousands of flags flown in the memorial.
Additional Patriot Day events will be held throughout the weekend, including a cannon salute, a military flyover and a Run-to-Remember 5k race, with proceeds benefitting E.S.C.A.P.E's Child Abuse Prevention Program and the Oregon Military Emergency Relief Fund.
