Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute Seeks Applications to Fund Up to $96 Million in Comparative Clinical Effectiveness Research

Second cycle of funding tied to PCORI's National Priorities for Research and Research Agenda

WASHINGTON, Sept. 17, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) today launched its second cycle of funding requests for up to $96 million in comparative clinical effectiveness research designed to help patients and those who care for them make better-informed health and health care decisions.

"PCORI continues to build a portfolio of research across a variety of conditions and treatments that will provide patients and those who care for them with information that they can help them make complex prevention, diagnostic and treatment choices," said PCORI Executive Director Joe Selby, MD, MPH. "As with all of our work, our latest funding cycle seeks applications for rigorously designed studies that involve patients and stakeholders on the research team and that answer questions of greatest concern to patients."

As with the first funding cycle, which opened in May, these PCORI Funding Announcements (PFAs) correspond to four of the five areas of focus outlined in its National Priorities for Research and Research Agenda:

Assessment of Prevention, Diagnosis, and Treatment Options– for projects that address critical decisions that patients, their caregivers and clinicians face with too little information.
Improving Healthcare Systems – for projects that address critical decisions that face health care systems, the patients and caregivers who rely on them, and the clinicians who work within them.
Communication and Dissemination – for projects that address critical elements in the communication and dissemination process among patients, their caregivers and clinicians.
Addressing Disparities – for projects that will inform the choice of strategies to eliminate disparities.

Additional PFAs, addressing PCORI's fifth priority, "Accelerating Patient-Centered and Methodological Research" will be issued beginning this fall.

As with all PCORI-supported research, successful applicants must have research teams with patients, caregivers actively engaged throughout the process, from generating research questions to conducting research and using the results to understand and address patient needs. In addition, applicants must show that they've considered how their research results will be disseminated and implemented and address ways in which they will make their work "transparent" so that other interested researchers can most easily try to reproduce their results.

Applications will also be evaluated for alignment with the eight PCORI review criteria that arise from PCORI's authorizing legislation.
