Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute Hosts Workshop on Patient Engagement and Research Done Differently
Workshop First in Series to Engage Patients and Broader Healthcare Community in Refining PCORI's Research Agenda
WASHINGTON, Oct. 24, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) will bring patients, caregivers, researchers and other healthcare stakeholders together this coming weekend in a workshop designed to start building a patient-centered research community.
The workshop, "Transforming Patient- Centered Research: Building Partnerships and Promising Models," will be held October 27-28 in Washington, D.C. Attendance is limited to 150 people, but those unable to attend in person can participate in a free webcast and submit questions via email on workshop topics.
"Developing new opportunities for collaboration between patients, researchers and others within the healthcare community is central to our goal of improving patient outcomes through rigorous research," said Sue Sheridan, PCORI's Director of Patient Engagement.
"This workshop is a first step toward doing that. We look forward to working with attendees to generate guiding principles that will ensure our work is patient-centered, from the selection of research topics to the dissemination of results," Sheridan said. "It is truly research done differently."
The workshop will help PCORI establish procedures for identifying research questions, reviewing research proposals for funding, and ensuring patient participation throughout the research process.
The event is the first of three workshops being held this fall to obtain input from patients, stakeholders, and research methodology experts on PCORI's process for generating and selecting specific research topics. Once implemented, the process will lead to topic-specific funding announcements that correspond to the priorities outlined in PCORI's National Priorities for Research and Research Agenda and complement PCORI's broad Funding Announcements.
