The event will feature a stellar faculty, discussing all aspects of LGBT family building options in a casual and relaxed setting. The curriculum will include legal concerns, medical procedures, adoption, surrogacy, sperm donation, egg donation, and foster care. Extensive information about fertility preservation and parent-making for transgender individuals will be stressed. Zika transmission and avoidance will also be folded into the curriculum.
This event has been 20 years in the making, as has been the friendship and shared mission between Ken Mosesian, Path2Parenthood's Executive Director and Donna Red Wing, Executive Director of One Iowa. "It was 1994, and I couldn't believe LGBT issues were being advanced in Middle America, but Donna was, as usual, on the forefront. Her subsequent work for One Iowa, and her work as a co-chair of Obama for America 2008's LGBT Leadership Council, inspired me to keep the quest for LGBT equality at the forefront of my own work, over the course of our 20-year friendship. Joining together now to create an event about LGBT family building is the perfect fruition of our 20 years of a shared goal," says Mosesian.
"One Iowa is proud to partner with our friends at Path2Parenthood, who will bring exceptional expertise and experience about family building with them to Iowa. This extraordinary event may be the first step for many in our LGBT community, who are thinking about building families and raising children," says Red Wing.
The event's faculty includes Donald C. Young, D.O., F.A.C.O.G. of Mid-Iowa FERTILITY, Shayla McCormally of Wandro & Associates, P.C., Joseph Fraioli of Iowa ACLU, and Kai (Penny) McGee, B.S. of Iowa KidsNet.
"Iowa's LGBTQ community has an abundance of individuals and couples who are seeking the opportunity to build their families, and foster care and adoption from the foster care system are just two of the methods available for building family. In addition, a disproportionate number of youth involved in the child welfare system identify as LGBTQ, and are in need of families and caregivers who can provide a safe, stable, loving, and affirming home to the youth in our community," says McGee.
Refreshments will be served and educational gift bags given to all participants. The event is open to the general public and free, but reservations are preferred. For more information or to register, click here.
