Passage of Spending Bill Brings More Lung Cancer Research Funding
Overall Program Total Near Record $100 million
WASHINGTON, Dec. 15, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Lung Cancer Alliance announced today that another $10.5 million for lung cancer research was approved by Congress late Saturday night.
LCA President and CEO Laurie Fenton-Ambrose said that to date $89.5 M has gone to the Lung Cancer Research Program, which LCA was able to have established within Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program funded through the Department of Defense in 2008.
"We made the case to Congress that military men and women and veterans are at higher risk for lung cancer than the civilian population and that a cutting edge, mulit-faceted research program funded by DOD and directed at lung cancer would benefit them as well as the civilian population since lung cancer was the leading cancer killer in both," Fenton-Ambrose explained.
Over 100 research projects were funded in the first five years of the program, with awards for 2014 still being reviewed, and another $10.5 M now allotted for 2015.
The mission is to support and integrate research from multiple disciplines for risk assessment, early detection, diagnosis, prevention, and treatment for the control and cure of lung cancer.
