Marriott International, Inc. Analyst Notes
On April 1, 2014, Marriott International, Inc. (Marriott) announced the completion of its acquisition of the 116-hotel Protea Hospitality Group (PHG), based in South Africa. Post-acquisition, Marriott became the largest hotel company in Africa, and almost doubled its presence in its Middle East and Africa region to more than 160 hotels and 23,000 rooms. According to the Company, its pipeline of new hotels in Middle East and Africa, including Protea's pipeline, extends to more than 65 hotels and 14,300 rooms, of which more than 20 hotels and 3,000 rooms are in Sub-Saharan Africa. On April 2, 2014, Macy's, Inc. (Macy's) announced an expansion of decorative rugs certified by GoodWeave, an international nonprofit organization. On April 9, 2014, shares of Chico's FAS Inc. (Chico's) rose the most in more than two years after Leonard Green & Partners LP disclosed a 1.3% stake in the Company. According to a news article on Bloomberg, with 2.05 million shares, the PE firm is the 22nd largest investor in the retailer. The shares of the Company rose a whopping 8.43%, ending the day at $16.97. Chico's traded 11.76 million shares during the session, significantly higher than its 30-day average trading volume of 2.58 million shares.
