WASHINGTON, April 7, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Partnership for Prescription Assistance (PPA), a program sponsored by America's biopharmaceutical research companies to connect uninsured or underinsured Americans to programs that provide prescription medicines for free or nearly free, is celebrating its 10th anniversary this week. Since the program's launch in April 2005, PPA has connected nearly 9.5 million Americans to public and private assistance programs.
Despite more Americans having insurance, barriers to accessing needed medicines still exist, underscoring the importance of PPA's platform to educate and empower patients and caregivers to obtain information about their prescription assistance options.
"For 10 years, PPA and our member companies have been at the forefront assisting patients who need help accessing their medicines," said John J. Castellani, president and CEO of the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturers of America (PhRMA). "We will continue to work diligently to ensure patients and caregivers across the country know that help is available through assistance programs and PPA."
In the last decade, as part of the assistance provided through PPA and individual company patient assistance programs, PhRMA member companies have helped more than 36 million uninsured or underinsured Americans gain access to medicines.
Last month, a redesigned PPA website was launched with new features and functionality to provide patients and caregivers with faster, easier access to information on more than 475 public and private patient assistance programs. The website also includes information on more than 100,000 free health care clinics throughout the United States.
PPA also has a robust presence on Facebook and Twitter to provide patients and caregivers with real-time information on the program and other consumer health initiatives.
