Partnership for Advancing Road Safety Issues Statement of Support of 'No Phone Zone Day'
WASHINGTON, April 29 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Partnership for Advancing Road Safety (PARS) has issued a statement supporting the "No Phone Zone Day" organized by Oprah Winfrey and Harpo Studios to fight distracted driving on Friday, April 30, 2010.
“We all know that distracted driving is the fastest developing traffic safety threat. PARS applauds the efforts that Ms. Winfrey and HARPO are providing to make sure drivers are paying attention to the road and operating vehicles safely,” said David Kelly, PARS Executive Director. “PARS looks forward to the results of the various distracted driving enforcement pilot programs ongoing across the country and to see what role automated enforcement could play in future enforcement activities.”
More than 500 communities and law enforcement agencies use automated road safety systems to calm traffic and make their communities safer. Kelly said that reports and studies around the world show that automated road safety systems prevent crashes -- saving lives, preventing debilitating injuries, and saving millions of dollars in health care costs and property damage caused by red light runners and speeders.
“While a vocal minority may oppose road safety cameras, PARS research indicates just the opposite – 80 percent of the public support intersection safety cameras and 67 percent support road safety cameras,” said Kelly. “Automated traffic safety systems share one thing in common with other proven safety countermeasures – they save lives. And that’s the message PARS intends to communicate to everyone we can reach.”
PARS membership is open to municipalities, government officials, public and private organizations, and concerned citizens.
