PARKLAND: INSIDE BUILDING 12 Documentary Recounts the Horrific Tragedy - and the National Movement that Followed - Through the Harrowing Stories of Survivors
Feature documentary by documentarian Charlie Minn, co-produced by Dreamscape Media, available on hoopla digital and Amazon on February 12, 2019
HOLLAND, Ohio, Feb. 6, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Dreamscape Media today announced the February 12, 2019 release of PARKLAND: INSIDE BUILDING 12, a feature documentary by filmmaker Charlie Minn that recounts the deadliest school shooting in U.S. history through the harrowing testimonies of the survivors. Through interviews with Parkland students and teachers, reenactments, and never-before-seen footage, the documentary explores the horrific event as it unfolded – and the start of the national survivor-driven movement that followed. PARKLAND: INSIDE BUILDING 12 powerfully honors the heroes of that day: the students and teachers of Stoneman Douglas High School.
"Six minutes and 20 seconds. That's all it took for a normal school day to become a national nightmare. For the survivors, for the victims, and for their loved ones, it's a tragedy we must never forget – and we made this film in their honor," said Charlie Minn, the nation's foremost documentarian on U.S. mass shootings. "PARKLAND: INSIDE BUILDING 12 focuses on the selfless and heroic acts that occurred within the halls of Building 12; and honors the countless lives that were changed on February 14, 2018."
PARKLAND: INSIDE BUILDING 12 pairs footage from students with visual guides to carefully reconstruct the events as they unfolded. Minn created an animated diagram of the building's floorplan to give a minute-by-minute depiction of the attack as it transpired and explores ways future events can be prevented. While outlining the events, Minn takes the focus away from the shooter, whose name is omitted from the film, and focuses on what was done to prevent further loss of life.
Center to the film are the firsthand accounts of the day, carried through 40+ exclusive interviews with the student and faculty survivors. Student Maddy Wilford, who survived being shot three times, and student activist Emma Gonzalez, are among the emotional testimonials.
Keeping the focus on the victims, PARKLAND: INSIDE BUILDING 12 remembers the 17 lives lost by telling their stories and interviews with their families. As the film examines the aftermath of the tragedy, it shines light on the student-driven movement that followed and sparked national dialogue and awareness.
"The survivors of Parkland have created a movement," said Minn. "One year after Parkland, we hope this film can contribute to the grassroots movement that prompted students, faculty, and parents to seek real change."
Minn has made over 25 films and has invested most of his filmmaking career studying U.S. mass shootings. His recent credits include ONE OCTOBER (the 2017 Las Vegas mass shooting) 49 PULSES (the 2016 Orlando nightclub shooting), BULLETS AT THE BORDER (three shootings at the U.S.-Mexico border), and 77 MINUTES (the 1984 McDonald's massacre).
"Charlie Minn continues to work to inform the dialogue around how we recount mass shootings, honor the victims, and prevent future tragedies," said Dreamscape Media publisher and PARKLAND: INSIDE BUILDING 12 executive producer Tammy Faxel. "Dreamscape is committed to producing this kind of important work and collaborating with talented storytellers, like Minn, to elevate these critical issues. We also want to ensure this work is accessible to a wider audience. Through hoopla digital, PARKLAND: INSIDE BUILDING 12 is available to anyone with a valid library card."
PARKLAND: INSIDE BUILDING 12 (run time 1 hr: 52 minutes), produced by Dreamscape Media, will be available to borrow or stream on hoopla digital, Midwest Tape's mobile and online service for public libraries, and Amazon on Feb. 12, 2019 at 12:01 am EST.
