PHOENIX, Nov. 25, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Days are beginning to grow shorter, and the nights are growing longer. Temperatures are dropping dramatically. Parker & Sons notes that winter is gradually approaching. Homeowners across the Valley of the Sun are doing everything they can do stay warm and cozy.

Unfortunately, many of the efforts individuals take to keep warm during the winter also increase their risk of experiencing a home fire. In fact, the United States Fire Administration reports that 50 percent of all home fires occur during the months of December, January, and February.
The danger is particularly high in Phoenix, where temperature can get quite low, but there is no cool, moist snow to slow down the spread of a fire. Parker & Sons advises Phoenix residents caution during the cold winter months to ensure that they do not experience a home fire.
Parker & Sons further advises that there are a number of safety measures that can be taken that will help reduce the risk of experiencing a home fire. Many families love the feeling of gathering around the fireplaces to share in warmth and comradery. The United States Fire Administration states that before families light the fireplace for the first time this year, they should have a qualified professional clean and inspect their chimney and air vents. Soot coated chimneys often lead to devastating home fires. The U.S.F.A. also calls on individuals to store cooled ashes in a tightly covered metal contained placed at least 10 feet away from any home or building.
Most importantly, Parker & Sons and the U.S.F.A. comment that all homes must have at least one working smoke detector installed in every level of the home. The smoke detector should be tested on a monthly basis. Homeowners should make sure they have always have spare batteries available. It is also important for families to have a home escape plan that they practice regularly.
"If anyone has any questions regarding home fire safety, they should contact their local fire department. They will be happy to help you out and give you all the information you need. We are happy to advise you on all other home service needs, but for this, for the real important stuff, you should talk to the guys who really matter: the firefighters," said Josh Kelly of Parker & Sons.
