Park West Gallery Artist Csaba Markus Unveils Caldographs
SOUTHFIELD, Mich., Feb. 22, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Park West Gallery and contemporary artist Csaba Markus are proud to unveil caldographs, revolutionary works of art that blend ancient techniques with modern technology.
Caldographs are the brainchild of Markus, a renowned artist who paints in a contemporary Renaissance style. Markus combines the "sfumato" shading techniques of Leonardo da Vinci and a printing method known as dye sublimation to create these highly-detailed works on wood.
"I saw these wood panels, and thought, 'Wow, we should recreate the Renaissance style with the same materials they used,'" Markus says. "The general idea of the caldographs is that the grain of the wood is different each time. It is a natural background you cannot recreate, so every caldograph is different."
Markus' artwork focuses on what he calls "modern-day Mona Lisas," depicting ethereal women who radiate confidence and sensuality. He says caldographs were inspired by the 500th anniversary of da Vinci completing the "Mona Lisa."
The name "caldograph" is a combination of the Italian word for hot (caldo) and the suffix "graph," which means "to write." Markus chose caldo in reference to the dye sublimation process wherein the application of heat and pressure causes the image to bond to the wood on a molecular level.
Once the image is transferred to the wood, each work is embellished by hand, finished with a protective, high-gloss varnish and signed by Markus.
Park West Gallery's latest video highlights Markus' background and provides a peek at the process behind creating caldographs. Watch the video here: Csaba Markus Unveils Caldographs on Wood.
The art of Markus is collected around the world, including on more than 100 cruise ships sailing the globe. The Toronto Sun named his painting, "Pure Love," one of the world's top 10 most sensual paintings, placing him among artists such as da Vinci, Pablo Picasso and Sandro Botticelli.
