Paris' Champs-Elysees Shooting - Travel Insurance Coverage Pending Terrorism Declaration, says Squaremouth
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., April 20, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- On Thursday, April 20, 2017, a shooting in Paris' famous Champs-Elysees district left one officer killed and two others injured. This is the most recent occurrence of suspected-terrorist attacks in popular European destinations.
Most travel insurance policies include coverage for terrorist attacks, however before travelers are covered to cancel their trip, specific conditions must be met. Travel insurance comparison site, Squaremouth, explains when travel insurance covers terrorist attacks.
Declaration of Terrorism
ISIS quickly claimed responsibility for this shooting. However, as of Thursday, April 20th, the U.S. Department of State had yet to deem the attack as terrorism.
In order for travel insurance to cover an attack, it must officially be deemed an act of terrorism by the U.S. Department of State, regardless of statements by other parties.
Location of the Attack
Most policies with terrorism coverage require the attack to occur within 50-100 miles of the traveler's destination. Some more specific policies require the attack to occur within a city listed on the traveler's itinerary.
Timing of the Attack
Most policies with terrorism coverage require the attack to occur within 7-30 days of the traveler's departure date.
"The terrorism benefit is meant to protect those who are prevented from traveling due to a terrorist attack," said company spokesperson Megan Singh, "either because they are unable to reach their destination, or because it is too dangerous to go there."
Timing of the Purchase
Travel insurance is meant to cover unforeseen events, meaning policies must be purchased before the attack occurs in order to provide any related benefits. Once an event occurs, it is too late to purchase a policy for any type of travel insurance coverage related to it.
Squaremouth launched the Paris Champs-Elysees Shooting and Travel Insurance Information Center to keep travelers up-to-date with coverage for this event. This resource will be regularly updated as information becomes available.
