Paralyzed Veterans of America Thanks Comcast for Its Support of the 2011 National Veterans Wheelchair Games
Comcast to serve as National Host Sponsor of 2011 Games
WASHINGTON, July 25, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Paralyzed Veterans of America (Paralyzed Veterans) is proud to announce that Comcast will serve as a National Host Sponsor for the 31st National Veterans Wheelchair Games in Pittsburgh, August 1-6, 2011.
"Our commitment to fostering an inclusive workplace extends to where our customers play as well, so we are delighted to lend our support to the National Veterans Wheelchair Games," said Charisse Lillie, Vice President of Community Investment for Comcast Corporation. "The Wheelchair Games is one of those events that level the playing field for the veterans who have sacrificed so much for the rest of us. We are proud to give them opportunities to compete."
In addition to providing promotional support as National Host Sponsor, Comcast, which serves more than 1.3 million customers in its Keystone Region, will provide a free broadband connection in the David L. Lawrence Convention Center for athletes at the event.
"Without the generous support of sponsors like Comcast, putting on an event as large as the Wheelchair Games wouldn't be possible," said Bill Lawson, national president of Paralyzed Veterans of America. "Both VA and Paralyzed Veterans are committed to the rehabilitation of veterans with disabilities through these Games, and our year-round adaptive sports programs, and we thank Comcast for showing their commitment to this cause as well."
The National Veterans Wheelchair Games, presented annually by Paralyzed Veterans and the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), are open to all U.S. military veterans who use wheelchairs for sports competition as a result of spinal cord injury, certain neurological conditions, amputations or other mobility impairments. The VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System and Keystone Chapter Paralyzed Veterans of America will host the 2011 Games.
Veterans at the Games will compete in 17 events: swimming, table tennis, weightlifting, archery, air guns, basketball, nine ball, softball, quad rugby, bowling, handcycling, wheelchair slalom, power soccer, a motorized wheelchair rally, track and field and trapshooting. Athletes compete in all events against others with similar athletic ability, competitive experience or age. About Paralyzed Veterans of America:
Sixty-five years ago, Paralyzed Veterans of America was founded by a band of spinal cord injured service members who returned home from World War II to a grateful nation, but also to a world with few solutions to the challenges they faced. These veterans from the "Greatest Generation" made a decision not just to live, but to live with dignity as contributors to society. They created an organization dedicated to veterans service, medical research and civil rights for people with disabilities. And for more than six decades, Paralyzed Veterans of America and its 34 chapters have been working to create an America where all veterans, and people with disabilities, and their families, have everything they need to thrive.
