Para-cyclist Dominique Mainguy withdraws from Paralympic Games competition
LONDON, UK, Sept. 3, 2012 /CNW/ - On the eve of the Para-cycling road races at Brands Hatch, the Canadian Para-cycling team announced that Dominique Mainguy of Quebec City has withdrawn from all the road events.
''Dominique injured her left shoulder in a fall while training," said Dr. Susan Labrecque, a doctor with the Canadian Para-cycling team. "She suffered a concussion and collar bone fracture. The collar bone fracture prevents her from moving her left arm, therefore she can't hold her handlebar securely.''
A rookie on the team, Mainguy was ready to experience her first Paralympic Games.
''Since she joined the Canadian team, her skills and competiveness increased with each training session," said Canada's Para-cycling head coach Éric Van den Eynde. "Unfortunately her fall in training forces us to make the difficult decision to remove her from all the road events."
This is a very difficult situation for Mainguy.
"Receiving the news about my withdrawing was like a slap in the face," said Mainguy. "I did not want to believe it, I wanted to keep training. I am really, really disappointed."
Mainguy added that when she could ride again, she will resume raining and prepare for the next Paralympic Games in Rio in 2016.
The road races start September 5 with the time trials in all categories.
