Panopto Upgrades Cloud Streaming Platform with Support for RTMP Encoders and Live HTML5 Video
SEATTLE, May 23, 2017 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Panopto today announced the latest release of its enterprise video platform. The release continues Panopto's focus on broadcast-quality webcasting with the introduction of Real Time Messaging Protocol (RTMP) ingest and recording, multi-camera HTML5 live streaming with DVR, and live event analytics. Also included in the release is a new integration with YouTube and updates to the company's iOS and Android apps.
Massive-scale broadcasting from RTMP Encoders
RTMP remains one of the most popular protocols for converting video feeds from cameras into media formats suitable for live streaming. For many IT and AV organizations, RTMP encoders from NewTek, Teradek, Elemental, Telestream, Matrox, and others are essential to the live production workflow. When the encoders are connected to a media streaming platform like Wowza, events can be broadcast at global scale.
With today's release, IT and AV teams finally have a new media streaming platform option. Starting today, these teams can connect their RTMP encoders to Panopto's cloud-based video platform in order to broadcast events to tens of thousands of simultaneous viewers.
As the RTMP feed is ingested, Panopto converts it to HTTP Live Streaming (HLS), the industry standard for delivering video at massive scale. Panopto's integrations with content delivery networks (CDNs) and WAN optimization solutions minimize video startup time and buffering. And with live DVR, viewers who join late never have to miss a moment of the webcast.
At the end of the live event, Panopto instantly makes the video available for on-demand playback, eliminating the publishing delays common with pure RTMP solutions. And through the use of Panopto's unique Smart Search technology, on-demand viewers can search for any word spoken or shown on-screen in the recording, and instantly fast-forward to that moment in the video.
"The success of every live event begins with high-quality encoding and the ability to deliver video at any scale across any network," said Eric Burns, co-founder and CEO of Panopto. "With the introduction of RTMP ingest, Panopto provides AV teams with a live streaming engine that leverages their existing encoding investments and scales elastically to reach global audiences, securely within their WAN or across the public internet."
Multi-camera live streaming using HTML5
In order to maximize the reach of live events, Panopto has also updated its media pipeline and video player to support multi-camera broadcasting using HTML5. This eliminates the need for third-party browser plugins, as many web browsers deprecate support for Flash.
Panopto's interactive video player provides a unique experience for watching live events. The player supports multiple synchronized video feeds in a single browser window. This provides viewers with the ability to see the speaker and their content at all times, and reduces the need for AV teams to perform live video feed switching during the event. The interactive player supports adaptive bitrate streaming, variable speed playback, live DVR capabilities, time-stamped digital notes, and custom branding.
HTML5 broadcasts can also be viewed in Panopto's embeddable video player. The lightweight player includes automatically generated embed code for easy integration into learning management systems, content management systems, and other web pages. The embed player supports adaptive bitrate streaming, variable speed playback, and custom branding.
Additional improvements across the platform
Today's release of Panopto includes a number of additional updates, including:
Live event analytics: During an event, producers and administrators can see viewing statistics for the live broadcast, including number of views, unique viewers, minutes viewed, and drop-off rates.
YouTube video integration: Video creators can now insert segments from billions of YouTube videos into their Panopto recordings.
Mobile app enhancements: Panopto for Android now supports offline video playback, and the latest release of Panopto for iOS supports background upload of video recordings.
Guided tour for new users: When new video creators sign in to Panopto for the first time, they're now presented with a guided tour that introduces them to product capabilities and accelerates time to productivity.
All of the updates in today's release will be available to existing Panopto customers at no additional cost. For more information on the release, check out the Panopto blog.
