Pajama Program Enters Halfway Mark of Its "One Million Good Nights" Nationwide Campaign for 1 Million Pajamas and 1 Million Books by 2015 for Children in Need
NEW YORK, Nov. 4, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- We are currently entering the second month of "Danger Season" – the time of year when temperatures around the nation begin to drop leaving underserved children in need of warm sleepwear and comfort. This same time also marks the second year of Pajama Program's One Million Good Nights nationwide initiative to collect one million new pajamas, one million new books, and the resources needed to get them in the hands of young children and teens in need here in the U.S. To date, One Million Good Nights has already hit its halfway mark with 500,180 pajamas and 590,428 books collected so far. The campaign will continue until December 31, 2015.

In June 2014, the American Academy of Pediatrics issued its first-ever policy statement calling for pediatricians to advise caregivers to read aloud to their children. This policy is based on the numerous benefits it provides in terms of promoting literacy and social-emotional skills. The lack of literate stimulation in young, impoverished children's lives is an ongoing problem as they hear fewer words, have less contact with adult role models and limited access to technology. This results in a deficient working oral vocabulary before they even start school. The impact of Pajama Program's unique approach, packaging caring, comfort and reading aloud with literacy skills, is significant.
In a recent interview with one of the Receiving Organizations that Pajama Program supports, a staffer pointed out that "The pajamas and books make [the children] feel 'normal,' like regular kids, like they are included in a normal part of life. Most of them haven't had what they'd call 'normal' experiences."
