PA Lottery Sells Powerball Ticket Worth $1 Million in Northampton County
Jackpot-winning tickets sold in New Jersey, Minnesota
MIDDLETOWN, Pa., Aug. 8, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- One winning Powerball® ticket worth $1 million from the Aug. 7 drawing was sold in Northampton County. Three tickets sold in two other states matched all five numbers drawn plus the Powerball to share a $448 million jackpot – the third-highest level in game history.
"This was a terrific run for Powerball, and although we didn't bring home our second consecutive jackpot-winning ticket, Pennsylvania Lottery players fared very well in the Aug. 7 drawing," said Lottery Executive Director Todd Rucci. "More than a quarter-million Pennsylvania Lottery Powerball players won prizes last night, so be sure to check your tickets."
The ticket sold in eastern Pennsylvania correctly matched all five white balls, 05-25-30-58-59, but not the red Powerball 32, to win a $1 million second-tier prize, less 25 percent federal withholding.
The selling location, Friendly Food Mart, 3750 Freemansburg Ave., Bethlehem, will receive a $5,000 bonus for selling the winning ticket.
Lottery officials cannot confirm the identity of the winner until the prize is claimed and the ticket is validated. Pennsylvania Lottery Powerball winners have one year from the drawing date to claim prizes.
The Lottery encourages the holder of the winning ticket to sign the back of the ticket, call the Lottery at 717-702-8146 and file a claim at Lottery headquarters in Middletown, Dauphin County, or at any of Lottery's seven area offices.
Claims may be filed at headquarters Monday through Friday, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., and from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at area offices.
More than 263,700 other Pennsylvania Lottery Powerball tickets won prizes of up to $40,000 in the Aug. 7 drawing, so all players are reminded to always check their tickets.
With two jackpot-winning tickets sold in New Jersey and one in Minnesota, the Powerball jackpot reset to an estimated annuity value of $40 million, or $23 million cash, for the Saturday, Aug. 10, drawing.
The Pennsylvania Lottery last sold a jackpot-winning Powerball ticket for the June 22, 2013, drawing. It carried a $131.5 million annuity value. A Delaware County woman claimed the $77.4 million cash prize on July 30. The Pennsylvania Lottery has sold 17 jackpot-winning Powerball tickets since joining the multi-state game in 2002.
In the 2011-12 fiscal year, the Pennsylvania Lottery awarded nearly $38.7 million in prizes to Northampton County winners and contributed nearly $23.2 million to programs serving the county's older residents.
How to play Powerball: Players pay $2 and select five white balls from the first set of 59 numbers plus a single red ball, the Powerball, from a second set of 35 numbers. Players may select their own numbers using a Powerball playslip, or they may opt for computer-selected quick picks. Players must match all five numbers drawn plus the Powerball number to win the jackpot. There also are eight additional ways for players to win a cash prize.
Powerball is sold in 43 states, Washington, D.C. and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Drawings are held on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
