PA Human Relations Commission Orders Philadelphia Recreation Council to Cease Racial Discrimination, Reimburse Expenses
HARRISBURG, Pa., June 29, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission has ordered the Kingsessing Recreation Center Advisory Council of Philadelphia to cease discriminating based on race and to reimburse Anne Coyle of Mt. Gretna, Lebanon County, $380 for travel expenses related to the investigation. The order took effect June 28.
Coyle, formerly of Philadelphia, filed a complaint alleging racial discrimination after the council refused to allow her to participate in its programs and activities. Coyle, who is white, claimed that she wanted to start a youth baseball league and the council disapproved of white staff and participants.
"Public accommodations like this recreation council simply can't refuse anyone participation based on race," said Gerry Robinson, commission chairman. "Pennsylvania law prohibits discrimination against all races."
In addition to reimbursing Coyle's expenses for travel to Philadelphia, the commission's order requires the advisory council's board members to undergo training on civil rights related to public accommodations.
The advisory council has 30 days to report to the commission on how it will comply with the order.
