PA Human Relations Commission Orders Northampton County Business to Pay More Than $7,500 in Sex Discrimination Case
HARRISBURG, Pa., March 23 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission today ordered the West Easton Athletic Association to pay a former employee more than $6,000 in back pay, interest and expenses for illegally discriminating against her based on her sex.
Julia Osmun, of Easton, Northampton County, filed a complaint alleging that the association first reduced her wages, and then dismissed her, based on her sex.
"Since 1969, Pennsylvania law has not allowed employers to pay women less simply because they are women," said Stephen A. Glassman, commission chairperson. "Simply stated, employment decisions must be made based on qualifications, not gender."
The commission order awards Osmun $5,888 for wages and tips lost from her shift reassignment to her termination, plus six percent interest per annum. Interest is calculated from Aug. 23, 2005, the last day Osmun was unemployed following her termination, until full payment is made. To date, the interest brings Osmun's back pay award to just under $7,500.
In addition, the commission ordered the association to pay Osmun $106 in out-of-pocket expenses, and to cease and desist from making discriminatory employment decisions based on sex.
The association has 30 days to report to the commission on how it will comply with the order.
