HARRISBURG, Pa., Feb. 8, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Pennsylvania Human Relations Commission invites nominations of Montgomery County residents who have made significant contributions in the fields of civil rights, equal opportunity, intergroup relations or advancing human dignity. Nominees will be considered for the commission's Montgomery County Advisory Council 2011 Joseph X. Yaffe-Robert Johnson Smith Civil Rights Awards.
"Those who work to promote civil rights, equal opportunity and human dignity are often unsung heroes working behind the scenes in our communities, schools and workplaces," Commission Chairman Stephen A. Glassman said. "They deserve tremendous recognition for their contributions to making Pennsylvania a more civil, just and fair place to live."
Award categories will include Law Enforcement, Equal Opportunity Advocacy, Education, Community Service, K-12 Student Service, Ethnic Harmony/Interfaith Understanding and Lifetime Achievement.
"The Lifetime Achievement Award was renamed this year in honor of recently retired Pa. Human Relations Commission Executive Director Homer C. Floyd," Glassman said. "His 41-year career of public service in Pennsylvania serves as a shining example of tireless commitment to the goal of equal opportunity for all."
The awards are named for two prominent Montgomery County civil rights leaders and former Pa. Human Relations Commission chairmen. Awards have been made since 1983 by the commission's Montgomery County Advisory Council, which is currently headed by Dr. Donald Clark of Willow Grove.
Honorees will be recognized May 11 in Horsham, Montgomery County.
