Anti-Roosting Measures Reduce Hazards to Pedestrians

HARRISBURG, Pa., Nov. 8, 2010 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- To help ensure the safety of pedestrians on the grounds of the Capitol Complex, the Department of General Services will begin its 13th annual crow dispersal program on Wednesday, Nov. 10.

Under the program, Capitol Police discharge caps or blanks and whistling devices to deter crows from roosting. DGS consulted with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to develop the anti-roosting measure. It is not harmful to people, crows, other animals or the environment, acting DGS Secretary Elizabeth O'Reilly said.

Capitol Police will repeat the measures each evening from approximately 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., as needed, throughout the coming weeks.

The program helps to maintain safety on sidewalks by reducing the amount of crow waste that can present a slipping hazard to pedestrians, especially in wet weather. The dispersal program must be conducted annually to reinforce its effectiveness.
