BOSTON, March 10, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Harriet Lewis, veteran traveler and vice chair of Overseas Adventure Travel, the leader in small groups on the road less traveled, is offering a free copy of "101 Tips for Women Travelers", which is now available in print. The slim, 86-page, 6 x 9 booklet is geared toward female boomers and seniors interested in learning how to make international travel as easy, affordable, and rewarding as possible and is being offered at a time when the percentage of female OAT travelers is increasing, especially solo travelers. "With 38 million female Baby Boomers in the U.S. today and more than 24 million women aged 65 and older, it's no surprise that we're seeing an influx of female travelers," said Lewis. "With children grown, retirement in the works, and a little more free time, many women are finally pursuing their interests after putting them on hold for decades. Our booklet is intended for those women who are passionate about travel. We hope that our tips booklet, filled with advice from hundreds of our female travelers, guides, and employees worldwide, will be of great service to them in their journeys."
"101 Tips for Women Travelers" includes a range of tips to appeal to both the novice and seasoned female traveler. The booklet includes 10 chapters of tips on trip preparation, packing, health & hygiene, safety, going solo, communications, digital photography and video, and more. An appendix section includes information about digital resources, a packing list, clothing size chart, international time zone chart, foreign phrase list, book and film recommendations, and even "Bandanarama", which offers 25 uses for a scarf. Interspersed throughout the booklet are inspirational quotes and stories of intrepid women travelers, some well-known and some not, throughout history.
Last June, more than 10,000 women downloaded an e-version of the booklet, which has now been printed as a soft cover booklet at the request of travelers.
Last year, 46,000 older Americans traveled with OAT, and nearly two-thirds of them were female. OAT solo travelers are on the rise, representing 44%, or 20,200 of all travelers in 2014 vs. 35% in 2013 and 27% in 2007. Women make up the majority of OAT's solo travelers at 80%. To serve them, and to make travel more affordable for solos, OAT offers a comprehensive solo-friendly program that includes free single supplements on all of its adventures and pre-and-post trip extensions, a free matching roommate program, a free online travel companion program, and more.
In 2015, the 50+ population will make up 45% of the U.S. population, according to AARP. The Administration on Aging's 2013 "Profile on Aging" reports that Americans 65 and older numbered 43.1 million in 2012, an increase of 7.6 million since 2002, with older women (24.3 million) outnumbering older men (18.8 million). The Travel Industry Association has estimated that 32 million single American women traveled at least once in 2013, and about three in 10 traveled five or more times.
