NEW YORK, Oct. 6, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, more than 21,000 EY professionals are rallying together to partake in volunteer activities across 582 non-profit organizations for EY Connect Day. Volunteers in the US, Canada, Mexico, Central America and South America will provide service to nearly 770 projects and initiatives, including those that involve entrepreneurs, education, and equity in the workforce.
In an effort to meet the most prevalent needs of local communities, the EY office in Houston also revamped its approach to EY Connect Day, with the goal of focusing all volunteer efforts in the city to alleviating the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey. After receiving overwhelming support from non-profits in the area, the office is hosting 27 volunteer projects in Houston, with a total of 1,200 volunteer spots for EY personnel.
EY Connect Day, the organization's largest signature volunteer program held on a single day, has been reinforcing the organization's commitment to building a better working world since 2010. Since its inception, more than 530,500 hours have been logged to help communities in need across the Americas.
"EY Connect Day is a day to reflect on the greater purpose of our company – to build a better working world by enhancing the lives of others through volunteerism," said Deborah K. Holmes, EY Americas Director of Corporate Responsibility. "From cleaning up neighborhoods in Houston through the Harvey Disaster Relief Initiative to coaching the next generation of entrepreneurs through the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE), EY volunteers are helping their communities while strengthening their own professional skills and expanding their networks with like-minded peers."
This year, EY professionals are mentoring nearly 18,500 youth and training more than 2,000 people on workforce preparedness. Volunteer activities include teaching work readiness and entrepreneurship skills to youth, introducing students to personal finance and career explorations, and conducting small group business plan coaching and one-on-one mentoring sessions, among many others.
EY Connect Day volunteers are sharing their experiences via social media channels using the hashtag #EYConnectDay.
