WASHINGTON, March 18, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Dr. Margaret Hamburg, commissioner of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, will speak at a National Press Club luncheon on March 27. The FDA Commissioner since 2009, Hamburg announced her retirement from the agency in February and will step down at the end of this month. Dr. Stephen Ostroff, recently FDA chief scientist, will be the Acting Commissioner until Dr. Hamburg's successor is named.
Hamburg's appearance comes in the wake of a recent Washington Post story reporting that the FDA has proposed allowing pharmaceutical companies to contradict official safety warnings. Her Press Club speech also follows other press reports of concern to the FDA, including one that showed that the sugar industry seriously influenced federal tooth-decay research in the 1960s.
The Press Club luncheon will begin promptly at 12:30 p.m. Remarks will begin at 1:00 p.m., followed by a question-and-answer session, ending at 2 p.m. Tickets may be purchased by going to the following link. The cost of luncheon admission is $23 for National Press Club members and $37 for non-members. Tickets must be purchased at time of reservation.
