Orlando Braces for War of Words as 200 Kid SCRABBLE(R) Experts Arrive for National School Championship to Compete for $10,000 Top Prize
ORLANDO, Fla., April 7 /PRNewswire/ -- They are coming from all over North America – Toronto, California, Texas, Indiana and more – backpacks filled with well-worn dictionaries, secret word lists and custom tile bags. It begins this week when 200 5-8th grade word wizards arrive here to compete in the eighth annual National School SCRABBLE® Championship.
When: Play begins Friday afternoon, April 9th and goes through late Saturday afternoon. Six rounds, followed by a Final match.
Where: Loews Royal Pacific Resort, Orlando
Why: A $10,000 first prize for the winning team of two, plus bragging rights among the nations 1-million+ School SCRABBLE® participants.
Also: Many know hundreds of words more than the average adult and go on to defeat grownups in national open competition.
"This is our way of telling kids that Smart can be Cool," says John D. Williams Jr., Executive Director of the National SCRABBLE® Association, which organizes the event, "that they can compete for serious money, be on television and bring glory to their school even if they can't run fast or dunk a basketball." It's all part of the National School SCRABBLE® Program where the classic game is being used in the classroom and in after-school programs as an innovative teaching tool. Among other skills, kids learn spelling, vocabulary, math, dictionary use, spatial relationship, teamwork and more.
