Orioles' Showalter to receive Sun's 'Marylander' award March 4 in Baltimore
BALTIMORE, Feb. 12, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Greater Baltimore Committee and the Baltimore Sun are hosting a reception and presentation of the Sun's Marylander of the Year Award to Orioles manager Buck Showalter on March 4.
The event will be from 5:30 -7:30 p.m. at the Baltimore Sun, 501 N. Calvert Street, Baltimore, Maryland. A reception with Showalter will precede the awards ceremony. Cost to attend is $65 for GBC members and $85 for non-members. The Marylander of the Year Award was established by the Baltimore Sun in 1987 and for 15 years honored the person who "contributed the most to Baltimore and Maryland and to the lives of our people." After a 10-year hiatus, the newspaper decided to revive the award. Past recipients have included Cal Ripken Jr., James W. Rouse and John Waters.
The Sun named Showalter 2012 Marylander of the Year on Dec.30, citing the "taciturn, passionate, obsessive, big-hearted, dogged and wise manager" for his role in bringing "unexpected joy" to many Marylanders last year.
"Mr. Showalter's business is, of course, a boy's game played by millionaires. But it is also one of the rare things that can bind every part of this community together, a tradition that knits one generation to the next," Sun editors wrote.
