Originally deeded by Lord Fairfax in 1760, estate to sell in November auction
MARTINSBURG, W.Va., Oct. 10, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- For eight generations, the estate known today as Spring Hill Farm served as home to a single family, 34 of whom were born in the Spring Hill House. Originally deeded to the Harlan family by Lord Fairfax in 1760, it served the family until the 21st Century.
Now, the property is set to sell at auction on Wednesday, Nov. 6, with Woltz & Associates marketing the property and managing the sale.
"In today's world, it almost defies imagination to think of a property remaining in one family for centuries, and it's a privilege to be selling it for the current owner, who purchased it directly from a Harlan descendant," said Jim Woltz, president of the auction company. "This remarkable family produced two Supreme Court justices, Marshall Harlan I and his grandson, Marshall Harlan II."
The 134-acre estate will be offered in five tracts, the largest consisting of 74 acres and including Spring Hill House, three other houses, and outbuildings.
"This tract also has a spring that produces up to 3,000 gallons per minute, barns and a 7.5-acre watercress pond currently being leased to Florida growers. The home has many fascinating features, including a wormy chestnut mantel that still has marks from early candles that once lit the room. This home, which has been significantly restored, is a magnificent piece of American history," said Woltz.
The other four tracts range in size from 2.3 acres to 37 acres, and one has the Overlook House built in approximately 1917.
The auction will begin at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 6, at the Comfort Inn Aikens Center in Martinsburg, W.Va. Individuals seeking additional information may visit www.woltz.com or call 540-342-3560.
