Organic Trade Association Honors Congressman Collin Peterson
House Ag chairman to be recognized for his service to organic agriculture
WASHINGTON, March 8 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Organic Trade Association (OTA) today announced it will honor Congressman Collin Peterson (MN-7) with its 2010 Public Servant Award.
Rep. Collin Peterson (MN-7), chairman of the House Agriculture Committee, will receive OTA's highest award for a public servant in an evening reception April 14 as part of OTA's 2010 Policy Conference and Hill Visit Days in Washington. The reception hosted by OTA will be held from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. April 14 in the House Agriculture Committee Hearing Room.
"We are truly excited at this opportunity to honor Congressman Peterson for his assistance in growing this sector of our nation's food supply. He has been a strong supporter of organic agriculture, and played a vital role in shaping the 2008 Farm Bill to give organic the largest gains, both in mandatory and discretionary spending, that it has ever gotten," said Christine Bushway, OTA's Executive Director and CEO.
OTA will recognize Congressman Peterson in large part for championing the organic provisions developed by OTA for inclusion in the 2008 Farm Bill. These provisions support the growth of domestic organic agriculture through funding for research, data collection, and cost-share certification, as well as for additional money for the National Organic Program.
Established in 2009, OTA's Public Servant Award recognizes and honors individuals in government who have shown outstanding support for organic agriculture and trade. The OTA's Public Service Award was first given to Senator Patrick Leahy (VT) in 2009.
In addition to honoring Congressman Peterson for his leadership, OTA's reception will celebrate the trade association's 25th anniversary and mark the 20th anniversary of the passage of the Organic Foods Production Act (OFPA), the 20th anniversary of the Organic Farming Research Foundation (OFRF), and the 10th anniversary of the U.S. National Organic Program.
The Organic Trade Association (OTA) is the membership-based business association for organic agriculture and products in North America. Its members include growers, shippers, processors, certifiers, farmers' associations, distributors, importers, exporters, consultants, retailers and others. OTA's Board of Directors is democratically elected by its members. OTA's mission is to promote and protect the growth of organic trade to benefit the environment, farmers, the public and the economy (www.ota.com).
