'IEEE Oregon Sustainable Technology Day'

The proclamation coincides with the IEEE-USA Annual Meeting, which begins Thursday at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Portland with the first IEEE Conference on Technologies for Sustainability (SusTech) at 8:30 a.m. http://sites.ieee.org/sustech/
Dr. Thomas P. Seager will deliver the opening keynote address at 12:30 with his talk on "Systems Thinking for Sustainability." He is one of five keynote speakers.
Seager, founding director of the Sustainable Energy and Environmental Decisions Sciences studio at Arizona State University, will highlight "multiple understandings of sustainability, from longevity to reliability to resilience to renewal," and explain three systems approaches to sustainability, including "logical problem-solving (optimization), systems thinking, lateral thinking and big-bang thinking."
The United Nations defines sustainability as "the pursuit of environmentally sound development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the future." SusTech is designed to explore the comprehensive nature of sustainability and emphasize the role of technology in achieving a sustainable lifestyle. Technical papers and posters will be featured in:

- Electric Vehicles
- Smart Grid
- Electronic Materials
- Quality of Life
IEEE Fellow Dr. Gordon Day, a former IEEE-USA and IEEE president, will close out SusTech on Friday at 1 p.m. with his thoughts on "21st Century Engineering."
Julie-Ellen Acosta, vice president, Phantom Works Prototyping and Supply & Operations Chain, Boeing Defense, Space and Security, will discuss "Workforce Sustainability through Diversity" on Saturday at 11:55 a.m.
On Sunday at 8 a.m., whurley (nee William Hurley), a co-founder of Chaotic Moon Studios, and John Sherry, director of Business Innovation Research at Intel Labs, will talk about the "Future of Innovation."
The IEEE-USA Annual Meeting, which runs through Sunday, brings together IEEE volunteers from across the country and provides them with basic leadership training and program ideas they can use in their home sections.
