Optus Selects deCarta to Power TrafficView
deCarta's Traffic Manager enables sophisticated services for Web and Mobile consumers
SAN JOSE, Calif. and SYDNEY, Oct. 5 /PRNewswire/ -- deCarta today announced that Optus, an Australian leader in integrated communications and member of the SingTel Group, has chosen deCarta's Traffic Manager technology to power the advanced traffic functionality in the Optus TrafficView service. TrafficView provides Optus mobile customers with a national road traffic information service designed to deliver a real-time view of traffic conditions. deCarta's Traffic Manager and the underlying Drill Down Server (DDS) technology render the maps, show real-time traffic flows and incidents and provide the fastest routes for drivers based on those conditions.
TrafficView gives Optus' mobile customers the most up-to-date traffic information through the use of an advanced technology called Cellular Floating Vehicle Data (CFVD). CFVD uses anonymous data about the location and velocity of mobile handsets to determine the real-time traffic flows on streets and motorways. Consumers can check current traffic conditions, get alternate routes when traffic has snarled the primary route and get alerts of bad traffic conditions on saved routes.
deCarta's Traffic Manager, built on the industry leading DDS platform, uses this proprietary CFVD data to display traffic conditions on a map as well as to calculate traffic-based routes for the mobile and web users. Unlike traditional routes which only avoid incidents, traffic-based routes help consumers plan their travel by calculating actual drive times based on real-time conditions, letting drivers know the best way to get to the destination.
Mark Mulder, Head of Digital Products, Optus Digital Media, said, "Optus TrafficView enables us to use our network intelligence to directly benefit our customers while they're on the road. The service analyses a combination of Optus 2G and 3G mobile data, looking at how fast or slow our customers are moving over time and then comparing this information to road networks."
"deCarta's model is to provide best-in-class location services in a way that allows our customers to leverage their content and brand into unique services," said J. Kim Fennell, President and CEO of deCarta. "Optus TrafficView is a perfect example of this. We look forward to a excellent relationship with Optus going forward."
