Open Source CoreOS Linux Now Available in China, Delivering Secure, Automatic Software Updates
Innovator in software containers brings open source operating system in China to deliver secure software updates and containerized infrastructure, enabling users to run applications in software containers on a consistent platform globally
Microsoft Azure operated by 21Vianet is the first officially supported cloud provider to offer CoreOS Linux in China
SAN FRANCISCO, June 16, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- In its mission to deliver secure automatic software updates to the world's servers, CoreOS, Inc. today announced the availability of the open source CoreOS Linux operating system in China. Microsoft Azure operated by 21Vianet is the first officially supported cloud provider to offer CoreOS Linux in China. Businesses with a worldwide presence benefit from running their applications and services geographically closer to end users for reduced latency and a better end user experience.
With the availability of CoreOS Linux in a new region, the distributed systems community as well as small and large organizations across continents will benefit from running their applications in software containers on a consistent platform globally. Current CoreOS Linux users can take advantage of a cloud-native platform to reach one of the world's largest markets.
"Expanding availability to a fast-growing market such as China is an important expansion for CoreOS, making available another option for small and large organizations that embrace continuous development and innovation, and operate on a global scale," said Al Gillen, group vice president, enterprise infrastructure at IDC. "With open source infrastructure solutions like CoreOS Linux available in China, Chinese businesses will be able to more easily adopt container infrastructure, while companies outside China can extend a single container platform worldwide and more easily deploy applications in China."
CoreOS develops software solutions to deploy, manage and secure containers anywhere and is the company behind open source projects such as CoreOS Linux, etcd, and rkt and enterprise-ready solutions including Tectonic and Quay. CoreOS Linux is container-optimized and designed for security, consistency and reliability. A single application's code and all dependencies are packaged within a container that can be run on one or many CoreOS machines.
Linux containers provide similar benefits as complete virtual machines, but focus on applications instead of entire virtualized hosts. Since containers do not run their own Linux kernel or require a hypervisor, they have minimal performance overhead. The reduced overhead means more applications can run on a single server, resulting in lower compute spend. With containerized infrastructure enabled by CoreOS Linux, users get automatic updates for better security and reliability.
CoreOS Linux for Public Cloud, Hybrid Cloud and Bare Metal
In China, CoreOS Linux is available and officially supported on Microsoft Azure operated by 21Vianet. CoreOS Linux supports hybrid cloud scenarios, including running a single CoreOS Linux cluster across cloud and bare metal environments.
With Microsoft Azure operated by 21Vianet as an officially supported provider of CoreOS Linux, the China community has access to an open, flexible, trusted and secure cloud. The open source community and Chinese businesses developing applications can now benefit from building and running their applications on CoreOS Linux.
"As a supporter of Linux and open source, we believe in the importance of working with innovators in open source like CoreOS to enable choice and flexibility for cloud customers," said Mark Russinovich, Chief Technology Officer, Microsoft Azure. "The combination of CoreOS Linux with the power and scale of Microsoft's cloud will help to inspire creation of new applications and collaboration across teams around the world."
