Open edX powered by Bitnami now available in Amazon Web Services Marketplace
Global availability of Open edX instances to thrive with AWS Marketplace listing
CAMBRIDGE, Mass., June 25, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- EdX, the open-source, nonprofit online learning destination offering MOOCs from some of the world's best universities and institutions to learners around the globe, today announced that Open edX, the open-source platform powering edx.org, is now available for free in the Amazon Web Services (AWS) Marketplace (AWS usage fees apply). The Open edX package, powered by Bitnami, provides a basic version of the Open edX platform that, with just one click (and acceptance of license terms), installs easily on AWS, and supports Internet scale deployments that can host thousands of courses for hundreds of thousands of learners.
Featured as an education and research product, Open edX powered by Bitnami includes a course management system that provides an array of authoring tools to help educators create courses that foster engaged online learning communities. Availability in the AWS Marketplace will connect Open edX powered by Bitnami with educational institutions and other organizations interested in offering courses and training to their audiences of learners.
"We are so pleased that Open edX powered by Bitnami is listed in the AWS Marketplace," said Beth Porter, Vice President of Product, edX. "Now greater numbers of individuals and institutions will be able to discover and access Open edX, which will help grow our open source community and ultimately accelerate improvements in the platform."
Bitnami, an open source application packager and environment developer, selected Open edX as a contest winner. Bitnami worked with Open edX to develop a package that could be hosted in the AWS Marketplace.
"Bitnami users have the opportunity to vote for their favorite applications and a winner is selected and packaged each month. EdX's recent win demonstrates a demand for tools that support eLearning, and we're happy to see edX join the Bitnami Library," said Erica Brescia, Bitnami COO. "Bitnami is committed to helping software providers embrace the movement to the cloud. We are excited to provide improved cloud capabilities for edX, while helping millions of people gain access to the platform that powers online learning."
Open edX operators can extend the platform to meet their particular learners' needs, and then contribute their features, extensions, translations, and bug fixes back to the platform in order to benefit the entire community and strengthen the Open edX ecosystem.
"We are delighted to have Open edX in the AWS Marketplace," said Dave McCann, Vice President of AWS Marketplace. "This offering further expands our selection in the Education category."
Institutions and organizations around the world use Open edX to reach their audiences of learners, including Stanford University, the Queen Rania Foundation of Jordan and more. Currently, there are more than a 100 instances of Open edX in more than 20 different countries around the world. With more than 1,200 courses powered by Open edX platforms, there are now hundreds of thousands of learners enrolled and engaged in courses powered by Open edX, in addition to the more than four million learners on edx.org.
