JERSEY CITY, N.J., Feb. 17, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Office and Professional Employees International Union (OPEIU), AFL-CIO Local 320 will protest against the Boilermakers National Funds' proposed decision to subcontract union jobs to CIGNA Healthcare, a mostly non-union company. The Local 320 Save Our Jobs protest will be held on Thursday, February 17, 2011 at CIGNA offices, 499 Washington Blvd., Jersey City, New Jersey, from 11:30 a.m. – 2 p.m.
Local 320 represents approximately 120 employees who process Health and Welfare, Pension and Annuity Claims for the Boilermakers National Funds in their Kansas City, Missouri office. The Boilermakers plan to subcontract these union jobs to CIGNA.
"This demonstration is to condemn CIGNA for its participation in the elimination of good-paying union jobs in Kansas City," said OPEIU International President Michael Goodwin. "CIGNA services more than 225 Taft-Hartley funds with more than 1.4 million union members in almost every union trade, and yet shockingly, they are largely a non-union shop.
"Union workers who are members of the labor union sponsors divert portions of their well-earned compensation to the Taft-Hartley funds for management and would be appalled to learn that their hard-earned dollars are being used to pay non-union workers, at the expense of laying off union workers," Goodwin said.
Local 320 is demanding that the Union trustees live up to their obligation to not only manage the funds in a prudent manner but protect and preserve union jobs. "These jobs must not be contracted out to a non-union company. The trustees must come up with a different solution," Goodwin said.
