DRAPER, Utah, Aug. 24, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, in recognition of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) Contact Lens Health Week, 1-800 Contacts released the key findings of a report by Survey Sampling International (SSI) that shows online consumers of contact lenses are more likely to follow healthy practices for lens wear and care than those who purchase lenses directly from their eye doctors.
The report, commissioned by 1-800 Contacts, shows the results of an April 2015 study of 2,000 adult contact lens wearers ages 18-49. The study was conducted by SSI, the premier global provider of data solutions and technology for consumer survey research. The sample size of this quantitative research was far larger than other recent contact lens studies and confirms the healthy eye care habits of contact lens wearers who purchase online.
The CDC has found that contact lens wearers who do not follow recommended replacement schedules have more complications and self-reported discomfort than contact lens wearers who follow these recommendations. According to the SSI study, 70% of online purchasers say that they replace their lenses most of the time in accordance with replacement recommendations compared to 61% of respondents who purchase lenses from their eye doctors. Because online retailers offer a less expensive way to replace contact lenses, their customers can afford to replace their lenses more frequently.
The CDC also recommends that contact lens wearers replace their contact lens case frequently. The SSI study shows that 60% of online purchasers report that they replace their cases every nine months or less compared to 51% of those who purchase from their eye doctors. Unlike other retailers, 1-800 Contacts provides free lens cases with each order, encouraging this healthy behavior.
The study also reveals that online consumers are more likely to wash their hands every time they take out and put in their contact lenses. 49% of online consumers say they follow this important practice compared to 43% of those who purchase from their eye doctors. The CDC recommends this practice to avoid risk factors for complications related to contact lens wear.
1-800 Contacts offers its customers frequent repurchase reminders and the most convenient way for contact lens wearers to replace their contacts in keeping with manufacturers recommended replacement schedules, helping to make the company the world's leading contact lens retailer.
