NORCROSS, Ga., Aug. 16, 2011/PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Ashworth College proudly (http://www.ashworthcollege.edu), announced today that since receiving its charter more than 1,500 Ashworth graduates have been inducted into Delta Epsilon Tau International Honor Society for Distance Learning.
In 2008 Ashworth College, a leading accredited online school, was selected by The Distance Education and Training Council (DETC) to receive a charter membership in the Delta Epsilon Tau. As DET's first chapter in the state of Georgia, Ashworth was given Alpha Chapter status. DETC is one of Ashworth's accrediting bodies.
"Students graduating from Ashworth demonstrate a significant commitment to education," said Dr. Leslie Gargiulo, Vice President of Education for both Ashworth College and James Madison High School. "Coming from all walks of life, many balance families, careers, and education in order to achieve their goals. To accomplish all this and achieve a high GPA deserves special recognition."
Students earning a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 and graduating from an Ashworth career diploma, college degree or a James Madison High School program are eligible for nomination into the Society.
While membership is optional, since 2008 an average of nearly 85% of all Ashworth graduates are eligible and receive an invitation to join.
Recognizing achievements of distance education scholars
Long considered a practical, convenient and economical alternative study method, distance education has made it possible for many students to gain the competence, confidence and knowledge needed to achieve personal and career goals.
To recognize the academic achievements of students who study at a distance, in 1997 the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC) Board of Trustees established the Delta Epsilon Tau International Honor Society (DET).
"The creation of this International Honor Society publicly demonstrates that distance study is truly a viable educational option," said Michael Lambert, DETC Executive Director, "Additionally, it serves to inspire both students and instructors in the distance study community."
