Ongoing, successful collaboration helps open the door to an award-winning application
Polyurethane balcony door from Inoutic wins "Innovation Award for Architecture + Windows, Doors and Facades"
PITTSBURGH, July 9, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Inoutic, a member of the Deceuninck Group NV, was recently honored for a prototype of a balcony door with a profile depth of just 59 mm. This profile was pultruded by another member of the Deceuninck Group – Deceuninck North America – using the company's innovative Rovex™ technology and polyurethane raw materials from Bayer MaterialScience LLC.
"For several years, Bayer MaterialScience LLC and Deceuninck North America have successfully worked together to advance applications for windows and doors," said Filip Geeraert, president and CEO, Deceuninck North America. "Bayer's collaborative nature has played an important role in helping our organization develop technologies that lead to new and innovative offerings, such as this balcony door."
"Since inventing polyurethane chemistry more than 70 years ago, Bayer has continually applied its expertise to push the technology forward," said John Hayes, principal scientist, Bayer MaterialScience LLC. "We utilize our dedicated, global customer development and support team to help open up new markets and new applications for our customers."
Coupling together Bayer's specially formulated grade of Baydur® PUL polyurethane and pultrusion know-how with Deceuninck's expertise to design and develop tooling, and rapidly pultrude complex shapes were keys to the success of the balcony door.
Strong yet lightweight, Rovex™ products are non-corrosive, non-conductive, and offer superior structural, thermal and environmental performance – all attributes that make it an excellent alternative to conventional materials, according to Deceuninck. Notably, the excellent thermal properties that can be achieved by using a polyurethane-glass composite can translate into energy savings for customers. This is particularly timely as thermal performance requirements continue to increase, such as the ENERGY STAR® Version 6.0 Residential Windows, Doors, and Skylights Specification, which will become effective in two phases, beginning Jan. 1, 2015.
The "Innovation Award for Architecture + Windows, Doors and Facades," was presented to Inoutic by the European architecture journals AIT and xia intelligente architecktur. Judges praised the "mechanical performance and process advantages" of the profile and were impressed with the slim line and design freedom with regard to the color and feel. The award was presented during Fensterbau 2014, a leading trade show in Europe for windows, doors and facades.
