Onewheel® Maker Future Motion Issued Broad New Patents On Its Core Technology
New broad patents extend the intellectual property portfolio of innovative Santa Cruz-based startup to recognize its unique contributions to the field of transportation
SANTA CRUZ, Calif., Oct. 25, 2016 /PRNewswire/ -- Onewheel®, the revolutionary electric boardsport, is now protected by sweeping patents which cover the core technology behind a broad class of single-wheel self-balancing vehicles. These patents, under review by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) since 2013, provide intellectual property protection to the Santa Cruz-based company, which employs 15 people in engineering, design, marketing and sales.
Specifically, U.S. Utility Pat. No. 9,400,505 (issued July 26, 2016) broadly covers the functional design of Onewheel®, U.S. Pat. No. 9,452,345 (issued Sep. 27, 2016) focuses on aspects of the Onewheel® rider detection system, and U.S. Pat. No. D769,997 (issued today) covers the design of a full-fender version of Onewheel®.
"At our core we are a design and innovation company, focused on building the future of recreation and transportation," says Kyle Doerksen, Founder and CEO of Future Motion. "To be recognized for the uniqueness of our contributions will help us continue to lead this market both here and abroad."
The newly obtained patents add to the intellectual property portfolio of Future Motion, which now includes three issued U.S. utility patents, two issued U.S. design patents, issued patents in China and Germany, an allowed patent in Taiwan, and more than 20 trademark registrations in at least seven different countries.
Future Motion also has numerous additional intellectual property filings in-process in the US and around the world that cover additional aspects of its innovations.
Knock-off personal transportation products have posed major consumer safety issues, such as so-called "hoverboards" from various Chinese manufacturers catching fire and causing property damage as well as injury.
Future Motion successfully defended its intellectual property rights at CES 2016, when the company obtained and executed a temporary restraining and seizure order against a Chinese manufacturer that was exhibiting a product Future Motion believes was infringing its patents.
"It's very important for a small US-based company like ours to vigorously defend our intellectual property in a world where many companies are looking to fast-follow and attempt to profit by breaking laws and selling potentially dangerous products," adds Doerksen. "We will continue to act aggressively against any individual or company that manufactures, imports or sells products that we believe infringe our intellectual property rights."
Onewheel® products are made in the USA, and are available online at www.onewheel.com and through exclusive specialty retailers.
