"One Voice" Rally on May 3 in Raleigh Brings Together Educators, Community Members to Speak Out Against Budget Cuts to Public Education
RALEIGH, N.C., April 19, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- May 3 is National Teacher Day, an observance that honors the critical role teachers play in the lives of children. Thousands of North Carolina's educators, along with parents, students, and concerned citizens will recognize this national observance with a rally in downtown Raleigh to show their support for public schools.
Recent proposals in the General Assembly put an additional 20,000 jobs in public education on the chopping block for this year -- even after public schools have lost 15,000 jobs over the last two years. In addition to 35,000 jobs lost, per pupil expenditure would be cut by $475 per child. Currently, North Carolina ranks 46th in the nation for per pupil expenditure and 45th in average teacher salaries.
"On this important day that highlights educators, there is no better way for North Carolinians to say thank you to school employees than to speak out against budget cuts to public education," said NCAE President Sheri Strickland. "Declining investment in public schools, educators on the unemployment line and fewer resources for our students threaten the prosperity and future of our state. Educators, parents, students -- anyone who cares about public education in North Carolina -- can join us on May 3 to speak with one voice and say 'fund schools first.'"
