One Tequila, Two Tequila: On The Border Shakes It Up for Cinco de Mayo
DALLAS, May 2, 2012 /PRNewswire/ -- It's fiesta time: On The Border is kicking off its upcoming 30th anniversary celebration – which officially hits in June -- and the 150th year of Cinco de Mayo by prepping for guests to Cinco like they've never Cinco'ed before. To kick up the fun, Jamie Carawan, On The Border's senior director of culinary, offers these tequila 101 tips to make the best margarita:
- Tequila, the national spirit of Mexico, can only be distilled from the Weber Blue Agave plant – a member of the lily family -- in the state of Jalisco, Mexico
- There are three different varieties of tequila: Blanco, Reposado and Anejos
- Blanco (plata, platino, silver or platinum) is an un-aged tequila that comes straight from the still to the bottle and adds the true tequila flavor
- Reposado is a rested tequila and a perfect match with Mexican foods, making a smooth, mellow margarita
- Anejo, or aged tequilas, are aged from three years and over. These pair nicely with desserts like flan, ice cream and cheesecake.
"Pairing different tequilas with certain foods really brings out the taste of the liquor and flavor of the dishes," Carawan said. "All it takes is a little tequila knowledge and having just a few recipes and ingredients handy, and hosts can whip up unexpected – and delicious -- combinations and drinks for guests."
