SAN JOSE, Calif., March 3, 2020 /PRNewswire/ -- Eargo, a medical device company dedicated to improving the quality of life of people with hearing loss, today made available a free online hearing check designed in honor of World Hearing Day. While typical hearing tests are tone based, this pure tone audiometry hearing check is designed to address real world hearing challenges with background noise, like hearing numbers in the context of background noise, to identify a potential hearing loss and assess an individuals' level of loss. It takes approximately three minutes to complete and is available on the Eargo website here.
According to The American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, adults should have their hearing tested every three to five years. However, in a recent Consumer Reports survey, almost 30 percent said they've gone for more than a decade without getting their hearing tested or have never had it tested at all.
"As an organization dedicated to changing hearing health every day, we believe it is critical for people to check their own hearing regularly," said Daniel Shen, Founder and Chief Clinical and Science Officer at Eargo. "We wanted to make our hearing check easy to use and easy to access so that people feel empowered to take their health into their own hands. We encourage those who take the test to spread the word to their friends and family in order to help people discover whether they've been living with this widespread and rarely discussed condition."
World Hearing Day is held each year on March 3 by the World Health Organization (WHO) to raise awareness on how to prevent hearing loss and promote ear and hearing care across the world. Hearing loss is an under-discussed but highly important public health issue: Over 42 million adults in the United States currently experience hearing loss, but only an estimated 26% of them owned a hearing aid in 2018. Untreated hearing loss impacts quality of life and has also been linked to cognitive decline.
Eargo's products and go-to-market approach aim to address barriers to hearing aid adoption - including social stigma, accessibility, and cost. Eargo hearing aids are the only virtually-invisible, rechargeable, completely-in-canal, FDA regulated exempt Class I device for the treatment of hearing loss. Eargo also offers personalized and convenient support from licensed hearing professionals. The company's latest product, the Neo HiFi was launched in January and features increased bandwidth, improved feedback cancellation, and a sophisticated wind noise reduction algorithm for enhanced performance processing speech outdoors. The Eargo Neo HiFi is available for purchase here.
