WASHINGTON, Feb. 18 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The following was released today by the Democratic National Committee:
Faced with daunting challenges over the past year, President Obama took strong and politically-difficult steps to rescue the country from a potential second Great Depression and to rebuild the economy for the long-term. In passing the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act into law during his first month in office, the President took these challenges head on – and with our economy is on the road to recovery, it is clear the Recovery Act has been essential for our communities.

Economists and independent entities agree: businesses and middle class families are reaping the benefits from the Recovery Act, including:
- As many as 2.4 million jobs created or saved through the end of 2009, according to the Congressional Budget Office.
- The GDP grew by 5.7 percent during the fourth quarter of 2009 – many economists say this is in large part due to the Recovery Act.
- Nearly 70 percent of the $499 billion in Recovery Act spending has been obligated to specific programs and projects so far, putting those dollars to work in communities across the country.
- Nearly $120 billion in tax relief has been provided for working families and businesses through the Recovery Act this year.
