Olin Corp. General Counsel To Join Jenner & Block As A Partner
CHICAGO, Jan. 9, 2017 /PRNewswire/ -- Jenner & Block is pleased to announce that Olin Corporation General Counsel George H. Pain will join the firm as a partner in its Chicago office effective March 1, 2017. Mr. Pain will support firm-wide practices, bringing decades of business experience, litigation knowledge and board-level advisory work to client engagements.
"We are pleased to have an experienced practitioner like George join the firm," said Litigation Department Chair Craig C. Martin. "He is a strategic fit whose deep understanding of the business and legal landscape will be an asset to the firm as we continue to expand our strategic efforts across a number of our practice groups. We will rely on his significant leadership experience as well as his work in corporate governance and strategic counseling."
During his tenure at Olin, Mr. Pain was integrally involved in the divestitures and acquisitions of several business units, most recently in a multi-billion dollar merger transaction in which Olin acquired a majority ownership of certain chlorine- and chlorine-derivative businesses of The Dow Chemical Company. The acquisition resulted in Olin becoming the leading chlor-alkali company in the world. He oversaw all legal, regulatory, public policy, compliance and media functions with more than 60 professionals reporting to him and had general supervisory authority for all corporation transactions, compliance issues, investigations, environmental remediation, and litigation. Mr. Pain also was involved in advising and counseling the company's senior management team, as well as its board of directors, while contributing substantially to the formulation and implementation of Olin's international business strategy in the chemical industry.
Chair of Jenner & Block's Firm-wide Corporate/Transactional Practice Joseph P. Gromacki said, "Our firm has worked with George as a client for more than 15 years. He is one of the most highly respected chief legal officers in the legal community and joins a long list of GCs who have found a home at Jenner & Block. We are very pleased that he chose us as the platform for the next stage of his professional career and are excited to tap into his rich transactional, strategic and other experience." Former GCs and chief legal officers who are currently or have recently been partners at Jenner & Block have come from organizations such as the Federal Communications Commission, General Dynamics, General Motors, 3M Corporation, SPX Corporation, Exelon and others.
While at Olin, Mr. Pain served as senior vice president, general counsel and secretary; he served as Olin's general counsel since 2002. Before rejoining Olin in 2002, he served for one year as vice president, secretary and general counsel of General Dynamics Ordnance and Tactical Systems, Inc., an operating unit of General Dynamics Corporation. From 1997 to 2001, he served as vice president, general counsel and secretary of Primex Technologies, Inc., an aerospace and defense company that spun off from Olin in 1997. Prior to 1997, he worked primarily in Olin's Law Department in positions of increasing responsibilities.
Mr. Pain received an LL.M. in corporate law from New York University, earned his J.D., cum laude, from the University of Connecticut Law School and received both a B.A. in economics and a B.S. in civil engineering, cum laude, from Bucknell University.
