Older Adults Can Learn Emergency Preparedness Skills in Online Forum: Disasters Are More Than Headlines from Mather LifeWays Institute on Aging

EVANSTON, Ill., Oct. 4, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- In the wake of what the National Weather Service calls one of the most disastrous years on record, Mather LifeWays Institute on Aging will present a one-hour online seminar, or webinar, Disasters Are More Than Headlines, October 12, 2011 at 11:00 A.M. (CT). Older adults living in their own home or apartment, residents of senior living communities, and family caregivers will benefit from the information presented.

As part Mather LifeWays award-winning program, PREPARE, this comprehensive web conference is available to anyone with internet access, and will help older adults plan for any type of disaster that could jeopardize their health or safety. The cost of the seminar is $29, which includes a personal disaster-planning template.

According to of NOAA's National Weather Service, severe weather represents a very real threat to public safety. The increasing impacts of natural disasters as seen this year, are a stark reminder of what is at risk. In a recently announced initiative, in partnership with other government agencies, researchers, and the private sector, the National Weather Service is charting a path to a weather-ready nation.
