OIAC Welcomes Bipartisan Resolution Condemning Iran's Human Rights Abuses
WASHINGTON, Nov. 24, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Organization of Iranian American Communities (OIAC-US) welcomes the recent bipartisan resolution H.Res.754, passed by the House of Representatives, condemning the gross violations of human rights within Iran. The bipartisan legislation was introduced last week by U.S. Rep. Ed Royce (R-CA), Chairman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, and U.S. Rep. Eliot Engel (D-NY), the Committee's Ranking Member.
The resolution was particularly timely as it highlights Iran's ongoing human rights violations, and serves as a reminder of the true face of this regime, particularly as the deadline for nuclear talks approach. The clampdown on freedom of speech, the arrests of activists and the ongoing public executions has once again demonstrated that the regime and its President Rouhani are incapable of reform.
On the legislation's passage, Chairman Royce said: "While Iran pursues its nuclear ambitions with relentless determination, it continues to repress millions of Iranians yearning for basic freedoms. Today's resolution stands for the principle that U.S. foreign policy can and must pursue strategic objectives, like the dismantling of Iran's nuclear program, while promoting democracy and human rights."
The ongoing human rights violations of Iran are an indication of the regimes waning popularity, and the lengths they will go to in order to suppress dissent and terrorize Iran's population in order to maintain power. We call on the United States to pursue a policy which avoids military confrontation, but maintains sanctions and isolation in respect to the Iranian regime. The only solution to the nuclear issue is one which supports democratic change in Iran.
In order to highlight the ongoing human rights crisis within Iran, OIAC will hold a three day human rights campaign on Capitol Hill. The campaign will begin on Monday, December 8th and will include a photo exhibition in the Rayburn foyer, as well as a Congressional Briefing on Wednesday, Dec. 10 at 3:00 pm. The campaign will conclude on Wed, Dec. 10th, which is Human Rights day, and hopes to continue to bring attention to the human rights crisis within Iran.
