MAUMEE, Ohio, June 2, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Ohio Virtual Academy (OHVA), an accredited, full-time, online public community school, will graduate its largest class in school history, with about 750 students in the Class of 2015. A graduation ceremony is planned for Saturday, June 6 in Columbus.
The Ohio Virtual Academy Class of 2015 earned a combined total of more than $2.1 million in college scholarship. Graduates are expected to attend some of the most prestigious institutions in the state and the country, including Case Western Reserve University, Florida State and Ohio State University.
Nate Davis, CEO of K12 Inc., the nation's largest provider of proprietary curriculum and online education programs, will serve as the keynote speaker at the graduation ceremony. OHVA graduate Monica Williams, Class of 2011, will also speak to this year's graduating class, focusing on her higher education experience at Lake Erie State College, where she received her Bachelor of Arts Degree in May.
About 15 members of the Class of 2015 have been students since OHVA's opening year in 2002. These students will be recognized at the graduation ceremony for having studied at OHVA from kindergarten through 12th grade.
"The OHVA Class of 2015 – our biggest class yet – is ready to use the skills they've gained here to make an impact in their communities and on the college campuses they will soon call home," said Dr. Kristin Stewart, Head of School at Ohio Virtual Academy. "We are proud of our school's growth over the years, and of the way we strive to cultivate an individualized education for each of our students."
Mason Clutter, a member of the Class of 2015 and an OHVA student since 5th grade, received his Associate's Degree from Columbus State Community College about one month prior to receiving his high school diploma from OHVA. By taking a few high school classes during his 8th grade year and utilizing Ohio's Post-Secondary Enrollment and College Credit Plus programs, Mason balanced college courses alongside his remaining OHVA high school classes. He received a scholarship to Hillsdale College in Michigan, where he will continue his higher education in the Fall.
"Mason has been driven by his goal of becoming a doctor since he was a sophomore at OHVA," said his mother Shanna Cote. "We watched him create an ambitious plan and go on to earn a 4.0 college GPA for two straight semesters while still in his senior year of high school. Our family is so proud of Mason's accomplishments, and now two of his younger siblings are embarking on a similar path at OHVA – earning college credit while completing high school."
OHVA is open to all students who reside in Ohio. By combining online instruction, hands-on curriculum and the support of Ohio-licensed teachers, OHVA helps students discover their individual learning style. OHVA gives advanced learners the ability to progress faster in subjects in which they excel, including opportunities for advancement in STEM education.
OHVA provides a rigorous and engaging curriculum, including courses in language arts/English, math, science, history, world languages, art and music, as well as elective and Advanced Placement® courses for high school students. College or career minded students can choose from a broad range of profession-focused courses in order to gain a competitive edge for the future, discover their path after high school or explore a possible college major.
