Ohio Virtual Academy Students Begin 2010 e-School Year
Enrollment Still Open for New Students
TOLEDO, Ohio, Aug. 23 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Online classes begin Wednesday for students enrolled in the Ohio Virtual Academy (OHVA), the state's premiere online school (e-school). The academy, which serves thousands of students from kindergarten through high school, is a high-quality, tuition-free public school known for its individualized online learning experiences for each child, using the award-winning K12 curriculum. In addition to providing students with individualized learning opportunities, OHVA also provides the curricular structure, administrative and teacher support, and regular opportunities for students, teachers, parents, and school administrators to come together as a learning community throughout Ohio.
"Ohio Virtual Academy is proud of the record of success in providing excellent education programs, customized to each individual child. This enables children to learn at their own pace and in a way that suites their unique learning abilities," explained Head of School, Jeff Shaw. "This is an exciting time of year for Ohio Virtual Academy's students, and we're looking forward to another successful year."
More families are choosing the Ohio Virtual Academy as online learning continues to grow in popularity across Ohio and the U.S. ACT College Readiness Benchmarks for OHVA's Class of 2010, released August 18, 2010, indicate the school's graduates exceeded the state's composite score as well as ACT-tested subject scores in College English Composition (17% higher than state average), College Social Science (9% higher than state average), College Biology (16% higher than state average), and exceeded the state's average student score in meeting all four tested subjects, including College Algebra by 11% over the state average. Sound evidence that Ohio Virtual Academy and K12 provide the tools kids need to succeed in school and beyond.
OHVA also provides an extensive support system for parents and students. In grades K-8, working closely with the teacher, the parent (or other responsible adult) serves as a "learning coach" for the child, helping to facilitate his or her academic progress and modifying the student's learning pace and schedule as needed. Monthly opportunities for connecting as a learning community happen through various school or parent-driven events and outings, enabling the entire school family to enjoy meeting others who share similar priorities and a commitment associated with home-based virtual education.
OHVA creates a balanced approach toward education, using computers and text books. Technology allows us to provide students a power curriculum that motivates, stimulates, and informs them about the world around them. A unique multimedia approach combines technology with traditional books, novels, workbooks, and other instructional and learning materials.
The Ohio Virtual Academy is available to families across the Buckeye state. The school continues to accept new students and will be hosting online showcases and information sessions for interested parents, students and teachers.
