Ohio Virtual Academy Marks Thirteenth Year Providing Statewide Online Education
K-12 online public school program offers individualized curriculum to Ohio students
MAUMEE, Ohio, Aug. 21, 2014 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Ohio Virtual Academy, an accredited, full-time, tuition-free online public school for students residing across the state, will begin the 2014-2015 academic year on August 25, 2014. The program marks the start of its 13th year providing an individualized approach to learning in order to meet the needs of every student. OHVA uses the award-winning K¹² curriculum combined with support from highly qualified, state-certified teachers to offer students in grades K-12 an exceptional learning experience. In past years, OHVA has been the recipient of a BusinessWeek Parent's Choice award, and in February 2012, AdvancED approved OHVA as meeting their standards for quality schools.
Students who enroll at OHVA follow an academic program that includes engaging web-based lessons along with instructional materials – books, videos, CDs and other hands-on tools and resources – which are shipped directly to each student's home. OHVA teachers provide instruction, guidance and support, and regularly interact with students and parents via email, web-based classrooms, online discussions, phone and face-to-face meetings. Teachers also organize numerous field trips and school activities where students have the opportunity to participate in events that blend academics and socialization.
"We decided to enroll my daughter at Ohio Virtual Academy last year, because the school provides a level of flexibility that is important to our family," said Donna Shepherd, who has since enrolled her three other children in the program, as well. "My daughter had to miss a lot of school days at her brick and mortar school, due to a medical condition, so we needed a way to give her a great education while caring for her health at the same time. All of my children will be OHVA students this year, and we're looking forward to learning together and working at a pace that suits our family."
OHVA provides core courses in Language Arts, Math, Science, History, Music and Art, as well as elective world language courses, while the high school program offers leveled core, elective, and Advanced Placement® (AP®) courses. All students have the opportunity to participate in a variety of extracurricular social and academic clubs.
"We strive to make sure our students are inspired by their education and that they have a fair chance to succeed," said Kristin Stewart, Head of School at Ohio Virtual Academy. "Students learn in different ways and at different speeds, so our goal is always to help them achieve success in a way that works for them."
Enrollment is still open for the OHVA 2014-2015 academic school year, and all interested families are encouraged to visit www.k12.com/ohva for more information, as well as details on upcoming community events and online information sessions.
